About John Israel's work:

Photo Theme:

Street portraiture: the people behind Lagos's street markets.

Photo Story:

I took this in 2025 at CMS Market in Lagos during a street photography walk. I was drawn to the wall of buckles behind him: hundreds of brands, all hand-picked and arranged by him. I asked for a portrait, and he leaned into the frame with that smile. To me it shows the pride and personality of the people who keep Lagos's markets running. and the warmth in his smile. What stayed with me was how hard people hustle in Lagos to make ends meet. For me, this portrait carries that pride and resilience.

How long has John Israel loved photography:

I've loved photography since 2020, and I've worked as a professional for about three years.

How they discovered their passion for photography:

I've always been a creative. Since secondary school I've drawn, made comics and done digital painting, so I've always loved visuals. Around 2019 to 2020, I was scrolling on Facebook when I came across a street photograph by Jean Fidele that told a story so curious that I stopped. I realized people could tell a story through a single image, and my love for photography started right there. I kept learning on my own until I got an internship at the end of 2023, and that's where I began working professionally.
