About Ahmed Zakari 's work:
Photo Theme:
Hope
Photo Story:

I took this photo because it reminds me of the children in my community. We are a small town of about thirty thousand people and many young people grow up around challenges they did not choose. But even with that, you still see hope in their eyes. The child looking at the light represents that hope and the belief that life can be better.
This is also what drives the work I do in my community. I care a lot about improving our environment and creating solutions like better waste management and recycling so the next generation can grow up in a cleaner and healthier place. When I look at this image, I see more than a child looking at light. I see the future of my community and the reason I keep trying to make a difference.
How long has Ahmed Zakari loved photography:
I’ve loved photography for almost all my life. But, I started to take action and being intentional for 3 years now.
How they discovered their passion for photography:
I got into photography because I have always been curious about nature and the environment around me. About three years ago I started taking photos just to capture things I found interesting, especially in nature. Over time I realized photography allowed me to tell stories and show people things they might not normally notice.
As I kept learning and practicing, it became more than just taking pictures. It became a way for me to share the beauty of nature and also highlight issues in my community. That journey eventually led to me receiving recognition in the 2024 Slingshot Challenge by the National Geographic Society, which motivated me to keep using photography as a tool for storytelling and impact.
