Title: Invisible
Photographer: Dukiya Obed Tobi
Location: Jos, Plateau State
I was invisible when I took this picture
It was during the 2023 qualifying stage for the yearly inter-house sports competition at my alma mater. This particular lady was the leading female track & field athlete for the blue team, and I can vividly remember seeing how completely invested and focused she was. It was mesmerizing
She had just finished a grueling 100m qualifying race. As she came to sit down, the first-aid team poured water on her face and gave her a small cup of glucose to help relieve the fatigue—you can see the residue on her face
But her gaze alone was what drew me to her. She was so completely focused that as I came close to take the picture, it was as if I was invisible. Man I must say the water droplets and grains of glucose on her mouth definitely elevates thsi picture. It's one of the reasons i choose to make in a B&W photo.
Most times in private secondary schools, female athletes are usually not as 'sold on' such intense sporting activities. But something about this child was just completely different. The race was over, but her mind was still on the track. She was still running, still competing, in a world all her own.

4 years plus
How they discovered their passion for photography:
Ok so during the lockdown in 2020, like every other student my plan was to find a way to keep my self busy so my brain doesn't go numb. I tried reading at least twice a week for months, but then after about 4 months I just gave up. I had been a tech enthusiast for quite a while, binge watching people like MKBHD, Peter McKinnon, Uravgconsumer, Parker Walbeck, Matti Haapoja, Manny Ortiz, Mrwhosetheboss etc. So I decided you know what imma try this YouTube thing. I'll be the Nigerian MKBHD. So I decided to learn how to make videos. I became a student to a family friend who was in the media space. She pretty much layed the foundation for my love for story telling. She majored in video production though, so I was the one responsible for taking photos for her media studio. All of a study I started getting sucked in into the wormholes of photography. Like I was completely consumed. I start trying out macro photography with my smartphone, shooting landscapes, sports, nature. Every opportunity I got to handle a camera, I made sure to utilise it appropriately. Safe to say some then I haven't turned back. Make videos still has a special place in my heart. It's something I still plan to pursue, but good heavens, I love talking to people through photos.
